NHS Sheffield CCG have been reviewing their approach to prescribing gluten free foods for people with coeliac disease and they are proposing changes to their guidelines for GPs.
At the moment adults with coeliac disease can be prescribed 8 units of gluten-free (GF) products per month. The proposed change would mean that NHS Sheffield CCG would ask GPs to suspend prescribing GF foods to adults over 18 years old. However, we would still be able to prescribe GF foods if we felt there was a genuine risk that a vulnerable individual would become malnourished without the prescription. They are not proposing any changes for people under 18 years of age.
The change is expected to save around £100,000 each year.
NHS Sheffield CCG would like to hear people’s views on this proposal, whether they live with coeliac disease or not, so we would be grateful if you could complete a short questionnaire by clicking here.
